GTA 5 Los Santos: Discover why he's still the king 🎮🔥
With the arrival of GTA 6 just around the corner and the enhanced edition of GTA 5 that features impressive graphical improvements (if you manage to make it work properly), I've decided to revisit Los Santos as it was in 2013. 🎮
Since I can't do a full replay this year and don't feel like jumping back into GTA Online, I've been focusing on cleaning up the map using a save from a few years ago. 🎮
For over a decade, I've been shouting from the rooftops that few developers have managed to match the feeling that the second iteration of Los Santos is truly alive, let alone surpass it. 🌆✨
There are plenty of games like GTA that are worth playing if you're looking for more mayhem on vast maps, but few, besides Red Dead Redemption 2, they can replicate that secret blend that has kept Rockstar setting the course for where open worlds will go in the future for more than 20 years. 🌍🔥
It's worth mentioning that I tend to really enjoy open-world games, although many of them don't quite justify their size. I'm enjoying Assassin's Creed Shadows and I also found entertainment on the mostly desert planets of StarfieldI love having freedom in such a medium. liberator like video games, and the modern model of World RPG Open worlds have huge potential by combining proven action-adventure structures with deeper, more complex systems. However, the best open worlds are those that shine thanks to small details and complex Rube Goldberg machines, and once again I realized that GTA 5 is still better than most in that respect. ⭐
Secondary (but essential) activities
GTA 5 never felt like a monotonous and repetitive open-world game when it came to side activities, but it's undeniable that there are a lot to do beyond aimlessly causing mayhem and working on an impressive collection of vehicles. At first glance, the 'Strange and Weird' missions appear to be the main offering, introducing several notable characters with their own little backstories and, more often than not, making Trevor seem like a more well-adjusted individual with "correct" opinions about modern American society. 🕵️♂️
These missions are a great way to discover quick activities that add flavor to the gameplay experience 🎮 and enrich the virtual world 🌍. Plus, they feature some of the funniest storylines and memorable dialogue in the game (and that's reason enough to complete them all! 😄).
What’s most striking is the care and attention that goes into mundane details, like playing tennis 🎾 or helping newly acquired businesses thrive 📈. While many open-world games turn these activities into mere filler, GTA 5 treats them with respect and takes the opportunity to develop all three characters through normal, relaxed interactions with the city 🏙️ (and its citizens) around them.
They're never reduced to mere player avatars outside of cinematics and scripted sequences, even if Michael, Franklin, and Trevor are the perfect representation of what Grand Theft Auto symbolizes when combined. 👨👩👧👦
I swear, I spent almost two hours playing tennis as Michael against his wife the last time I booted up the game. 🎾 The chilled-out post-match vibes are spot-on, and their new dialogue as they just do rich married-couple things while also showing off their undeniably aggressive streaks makes the (expertly designed and super-engaging) minigame feel like so much more. 👫
Rockstar has understood the importance of letting characters breathe since GTA 4, and while Red Dead Redemption 2 has the most mature narrative the developer has released yet, to detract from GTA 5's impressive efforts (often done in unexpected ways) in that regard because of its lighter tone saddens me. 😢
Unscripted comedy and chaos
By chasing the 100% completion mark (I'll happily admit I don't have that in me) and jumping between side missions, races, stalking celebrities for quick cash, and so on, GTA 5's main trick to not feeling repetitive is allowing its world to be truly unpredictable. Despite all the impressive technology modern open-world games are built with, the overall design tends to be too restrictive and rigid. After a while, you can predict how NPCs will react, how to "break" certain systems, and how to navigate all the available content most efficiently. 🕵️♀️
RPG giants are especially guilty of this, often causing massive worlds to lose much of their charm long before players have explored most of the good stuff they have to offer. 🎮 When numbers and tightly defined mechanics dominate and limit the connection between player and setting (and thus the amount of experimentation possible), you wonder if some games would be better off as more linear (and much less expensive) experiences. 🤔
There is a clear reason why Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were so successful, and why can't anyone "copy and paste" exactly what makes Bethesda's worlds so compelling to explore and enjoy. 🌟
Those are great examples of reactive sandboxes that really let players do things their way. 🗺️
While Rockstar hasn't quite jumped into the "RPG mechanics" pool yet (though some would argue otherwise), it's a studio that historically understands the importance of sandboxes being sandboxes. It doesn't matter that 'random events' and things going haywire as AI scripts collide are 'gimmicks' when the end results are so convincing and make every walk or path through LS genuinely interesting and immersive. It's a fun world to simply reside in, and it's hard to predict. How much will the developers push the boundaries in the sixth installment? from a series that has always been one step ahead. 🔮
In short, GTA 5 It remains an undisputed benchmark in the open-world genre 🌍, thanks to its masterful combination of minute details, memorable characters 🎭 and a city that truly feels alive and dynamic 🚗💨. Despite technological advances and the arrival of new titles that promise to innovate, The Saints It maintains its charm and its ability to surprise even those of us who return again and again 🔄.
The enhanced edition and the expectation for GTA 6 They only reaffirm the legacy that Rockstar has built for more than a decade ⏳, proving that an open world full of chaos, humor 😂 and a life of its own remains unbeatable when it is created with such love and precision 🎮❤️.
While we wait for the next chapter, there's no better way to enjoy the present than to get lost again in the streets of Los Santos 🚦, where every corner holds a story 📖 and every activity, no matter how simple it may seem, enriches a unique experience that few games manage to replicate ✨.
