Real Photo Backup vs. Cloud Sync 📂

Backing up your photos is a critical decision for those who blindly trust iCloud to protect their memories. Cloud syncing is not the same as having independent, recoverable copies. In a scenario where a mistake or failure could be irreversible, generic solutions are no longer sufficient.

📸 A photo album is the classic item most people would grab if their house were on fire, yet many still don't properly back up their valuable photo libraries. Even if you use iCloud to store and sync all your photos, it doesn't mean they're truly backed up!

iCloud Photos Is Not a Real Backup Service

Apple states in its support page iCloud "backs up" your photos, but iCloud Photos is not a backup service.

The main problem is that syncing with iCloud Photos means there's only one true copy of each photo: the one in iCloud. The copies downloaded to your devices depend on that master copy in the cloud, so if it fails, the same corruption or loss is replicated locally.

Therefore, the ideal solution is to download your entire photo library from iCloud and create a proper backup. This way, your photos will be protected against any serious iCloud issues.

Unfortunately, this process can't be automated and can be tedious if you have a lot of photos. Also, this backup won't automatically update with new photos; you'll need to do it manually and periodically. But it's totally worth it to protect your memories. 😊

1 Download your photos from iCloud

📱 Aunque puedes descargar tus fotos directamente desde un iPhone o iPad, no es recomendable por su lentitud y limitaciones. Lo ideal es usar una Mac para este proceso, ¡valdrá la pena! 💻

Open the Photos app and go to Photos > Settings in the menu bar. Select the "iCloud" tab and turn on the "Download Originals to This Mac" option. This will begin saving all your original photos to your Mac's local disk.

Settings to download original photos to your Mac in the Photos app.

🧹 You may need to free up space on your Mac before starting the download. Go to System Preferences > General > Storage to check and free up space if you see a warning.

If you can't free up enough space, don't worry. We'll explain an alternative method for backing up your photos using an external drive later. 🔄

To verify the download, scroll to the bottom of your Photos library; when it's finished, create a backup on an external drive. 🔄💾

2 Copy Your Photo Library

Open Finder and press Command+Shift+H to go to the Home folder. Inside the folder Images you will find the file Photos Library.photoslibrary, which contains your entire iCloud Photos library.

Drag that file to an external hard drive to create a secure backup. That way, your photos will be backed up off-system!

Archive of the Photos library in Finder for external copy.

🔐 With this backup, if something goes wrong or disappears in iCloud, you can open that library from your external drive and access all your photos.

Then, if you want, you can optimize storage in Photos again to free up space on your Mac without affecting your external copy.

⚠️ Remember that this backup is not automatically updated. Repeat this process periodically to protect your most recent photos.

3 Back up your data with Time Machine

Having a copy on an external drive is great, but the best practice is to include that drive in your regular Time Machine backups. This macOS feature will create regular backups of your Mac and any connected external drives.

To do this, connect your external drive and go to System Preferences > General > Time Machine. Click "Options" to see which files or drives are excluded. Apple excludes external drives by default, so select your drive and click the minus ("-") button to include it.

✅ After excluding your external drive from the exclusion list, Time Machine will automatically back it up when you perform backups. Just make sure the drive is connected during the backup process.

What to do if you don't have enough space on your Mac?

If your iCloud Photos library is taking up more space than you have available on your Mac, you can download photos directly to an external drive. To do this, first copy your current library to that drive.

Connect your external drive to your Mac and make sure the format is compatible (APFS or Mac OS Extended – Journaled). Also, verify that it has enough capacity to hold your entire library.

Close the Photos app and open Finder. Press Command+Shift+H to go to the file Start, go to "Images" and drag the file Photos Library.photoslibrary to your external hard drive to create a copy. ✨

Photos Library file in Finder ready to copy to external drive.

This action creates a copy; it does not move the original file (very important). It renames the file on the external drive to something like External Photo Library.photoslibrary to differentiate it.

Click Photos while holding down the Option key and select the library on the external drive. In Photos > Settings > General, check "Use as System Library" and confirm. Then return to the iCloud tab and turn on "Photos in iCloud" with the "Download originals to this Mac" option.

This will download the photos directly to the external drive, preventing your Mac's storage from becoming full. You can track the progress at the bottom of the app.

Once the download is complete, close Photos and reopen it while holding down the Option key. Select the original library on your Mac, and you're done. Don't forget to set up Time Machine to back up this external drive and your photos as well.

✨ Repeat this process regularly to keep your backup up-to-date with the latest photos.

In short, iCloud Photos is fantastic for syncing and accessing your photos from any device. However, a true and reliable backup of back Being offline is crucial to avoid missing those unique moments. 🔒

Don't take risks: get an external hard drive and follow these steps regularly to always have a safe copy of your most precious memories. Your photos will thank you! 📂💖
