Alder Lake-H P and U

Alder Lake-H P and U: the twelfth generation Mobile.

It is a key launch for Intel and, more specifically, for Alder Lake, its twelfth generation.

And it just so happens that his much more than considerable debut with Alder Lake-S, has taken advantage of CES 2022 to show us a plethora of families aimed at multiple market segments, with processors that cover a particularly wide range, thus ensuring that users and assemblers alike will always have a chip that meets their needs for each type of system they wish to assemble.

And so does Regarding laptops, today we saw three new series:

Alder Lake-H (one with the multiplier unlocked),

Alder Lake-P and Alder Lake-U, which bring each and every news of the twelfth generation architecture to a spectrum that ranges from gaming equipment, which is always considered to have the best possible performance, to the resolutions of mobility much lighter and more efficient in terms of their autonomy.

In each and every case, of course, taking advantage of the news, regarding its architecture, Alder Lake.

Alder Lake-H, P and U: the twelfth generation goes all out in laptops

AND The focus is, of course, on family H, the most range in terms of performance, and that is where we are going to find chips of up to 14 cores and 20 threads (six high-performance cores and eight high-efficiency cores), with a maximum throughput of up to five gigahertz, 24 megabytes of L3 cache, and all with a base consumption (without turbo) of only 45 watts.

That is, what the chip provides us, specifically Intel Core i9-12900H, of which we will also be able to get a version with the multiplier unlocked, the Core i9-12900HK, which will allow us to maximize its performance.

With those 2 models as you find range and representatives of the i9 family, the initiative continues with three other Core I7 chips, 2 of them with information quite close to that of the 2 i9 (i7-12800H and also i7-12700H) and a third, the i7-12650H, with ten cores (six performance and 4 efficiency) and 16 threads, which we can refer to as the midpoint of Alder Lake-H.

And as an "entry point" (and I put it in quotation marks because we have to take into account that we are talking about the high-performance initiative of Intel for laptops with Alder Lake) we can find three Core i5 processors: the i5-12600H and also the i5-12500H, both with 12 cores (4 performance and eight efficiency) and 16 threads, 18 megabytes of L3 cache and up to 4.5 gigahertz, and closing the list is the Core i5-12450H, which has eight cores (4 performance and 4 efficiency), reaches up to 4.4 gigahertz and has 12 megabytes of L3 cache.

For those looking for a more middle ground between performance and consumption, The initiative is Alder Lake-P, a family of chips with a base consumption of 28 watts and where the top of the range is the Intel Core i7-1280P, with 14 cores (six performance and eight efficiency) for a total of 20 threads, with the ability to achieve a continuity of 4.8 gigahertz and with 24 megabytes of L3 cache.

With Alder Lake-P, as you can see in the table below, the initiative of Intel are three integrated i7, 2 integrated i5s and a Core i3 with the ability to scale up to 4.4 gigahertz.

Laptops with more than ten hours of battery life? Ultra-light, small-format laptops with optimal performance but, above all, great efficiency? The twelfth generation's answer to these needs is undoubtedly the Intel Alder Lake-U, a family that is distributed in parallel in 2 large blocks based on their base consumption, 15 and 9 watts, in which we can also find representatives of the historic but still current Celeron and Pentium families.

Alder Lake-H: The news of the new generation

When we talk about a new generation, many people condense the discussion into performance. And this is understandable, of course, since it is normal to expect a significant leap in this regard.

And after how difficult AMD was making it (and continues to make it) it was necessary for Intel to make a statement, something that it undoubtedly did with Alder Lake, as we saw with the S family months ago.

However, talking only about performance is a terribly simplistic approach, since the user does not live in gigahertz alone, it is also essential that, in his hands, he reaches the deployment of novel technologies, such as advances that improve performance and provide a new vision of the future.

And without it, without evolution, we might still be using dumb platforms connected to huge servers that would do all the heavy lifting.

Alder Lake-H: What's new in the new generation

In this regard, through Alder Lake A colossal group of news arrived, from which the H family takes full advantage.

The main one, undoubtedly, is Hybrid architecture, a model that we are familiar with in ARM integrated circuits, but which begins in the x86 world through Intel.

This model, considerably more flexible but also more complex, is managed thanks to the technology Intel Thread Management, which acts by distributing work in an able manner, not only to improve performance, but also the efficiency of the system.

In this way, with each and every one of these updates, as Intel has told us Alder Lake-H's performance would be the absolute winner when it comes to the smart mobile interface, surpassing not only (and as expected) its predecessor, but also the AMD and Apple integrated processors, as you can see in the graph above, where the top of the range of this new generation, the Core i9-12900HK, which we told you about at the beginning of this article, is compared with the Apple M1 Max announced last October, and with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, AMD's top of the range for laptops.

Intel Evo: Alder Lake also reaches Intel certification

While efficiency is found in all Alder Lake chips, thanks to the debut of the hybrid architecture, Intel Evo certification is paradigmatic in this sense, since each and every one of the elements of the systems that opt for exactly the same must meet a sequence of conditions that ensure that we are not only talking about laptops, but rather about solutions designed with mobility in mind.

In the third iteration of the certification, we can find a really rigorous list of requirements, and from which the following elements can be highlighted:

  • SoC Employment Alder Lake.
  • Intel WiFi 6E connectivity.
  • Active noise reduction system
  • FullHD camera.

All of the above, of course, in addition to the rigorous requirements mentioned above, related to battery life, instant-start capability and fast-charging capabilities, for example.

In addition to this, among the most interesting news is the arrival of Information for gadgets with foldable screens, a market that is emerging in the ecosystem of phones smart, and it shouldn't take much longer to reach the world of laptops.
