What is defragmentation?

When you install and use software in Windows, data becomes fragmented and scattered across your hard drive. This fragmentation causes the system to take longer to access files because it has to search for them in multiple locations.

HDDs in particular suffer from a slowdown because they need to read and write fragmented data spread across different areas. Defragmentation is a process that reorganizes this fragmented data, filling in free space and consolidating files.

How to defragment a hard drive in Windows 11

Now that you understand what defragmentation is, it's time to optimize your hard drive. Follow these steps to defragment in Windows 11 and improve your computer's speed.

1. Write Defragment in the Windows 11 search engine. Select Defragment and optimize drives among the suggested results.

2. Select the drive you want to optimize. It's recommended to start with the drive where Windows is installed (usually C:).

3. Click the button Analyze to know the percentage of fragmentation.

4. If the fragmentation exceeds 10%, press Optimize to start the defragmentation process.

How to schedule disk optimization

Windows 11 lets you automate optimization To keep your system always fast, set up a weekly or monthly schedule by following these steps.

1. Click on Change settings within the Optimize Drives window.

2. Check the box Run on a schedule (recommended).

3. Define the optimization frequency between daily, weekly or monthly to keep your PC always agile.

How to defragment a disk using the Command Prompt

If you're comfortable using command lines, Windows 11 lets you easily defragment disks with Command Prompt.

1. Search Command Prompt in Windows. Right-click and select Run as administrator.

2. Type the following command and press Enter:

defrag [drive_letter]

Important: Replaces [drive_letter] by the letter of the drive you want to defragment.

3. Wait for the process to complete. Depending on the size and fragmentation, this may take several minutes.

4. To optimize an SSD, use this command:

defrag [drive_letter] /L

Remember: Replaces [drive_letter] by the identifier of your SSD drive.

5. Close the Command Prompt window and restart your PC to apply the changes.
