Error Code 3 0x80040154 🚀 Fix Chrome in Minutes!

Although Google Chrome is less prone to crashes than other web browsers, users may occasionally encounter issues. Recently, many have reported Error Code 3: 0x80040154, a system-wide error message that appears when trying to update the web browser. 🚨

If you're also receiving the same error message when updating your Chrome browser, don't worry! We've got some solutions to help you resolve the issue. 😊

How to Fix Error Code 3: 0x80040154 in Google Chrome

Before we look at the troubleshooting methods, let's discuss the reasons why Error Code 3: 0x80040154 appears. Here are the most common reasons that cause this error when updating Google Chrome.

  • The Google Chrome Update Tool cannot connect to the server.
  • You have recently installed a VPN or proxy server.
  • Chrome files are corrupted.
  • Malware or viruses on your Windows PC.

So, these are some of the most likely reasons for Error Code 3: 0x80040154. Below, we'll show you the steps to resolve this error.

1. Restart the Chrome Browser

The first thing you should do when you encounter the error message Code 3: 0x80040154 is to restart your Chrome browser. 🔄

This error may be due to a bug or glitch. The best way to resolve these issues is to restart your browser. Close Chrome and end all its processes from the Task Manager.

2. Restart your computer

Restart your Computer/Laptop

The second step you should take if restarting Chrome doesn't fix error 3: 0x80040154 is to restart your computer. 💻

Restarting your computer can resolve temporary issues that could prevent the Google Update Service from working. To do so, click the Windows Start button and select "Restart."

3. Disable VPN or Proxy

Disable Proxies or VPNs

Using a VPN or proxy server isn't a problem in itself, but error 3: 0x80040154 may appear when the Chrome Update Service is unable to function. ❌

There are several reasons why the Chrome Update Service might not be working, the most common being the use of a VPN or Proxy.

Sometimes VPNs, especially free ones, prevent the Google Update Service (gupdate) from connecting to the server, resulting in error message 3: 0x80040154.

4. Start the Google Update Service

Viruses and malware can prevent the Google Update Service from working. The best way to deal with this is to perform a full scan using Windows Security. After the scan, you'll need to start the Google Update Service manually. Here's how to do it.

1. First, click on Windows Search and type RUN. Then, select RUN from the list of options to open the RUN dialog box.

2. In the RUN dialog box, type services.msc and press the key Enter.

3. In the list of services, find and double-click Google Update Services (gupdate).

Here's how to manually start Google Update Services on a Windows computer. 🛠️

5. Enable Chrome Update from the Windows Registry

If the previous method didn't work, you can enable Chrome updates from the Registry Editor. Here's how to do it.

Enable Chrome Update from the Windows Registry

  • Press the keys Windows + R on your keyboard. I typed regedit.exe in the RUN dialog box and press Enter.
  • When the Registry Editor opens, navigate to this path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Update
  • Now double click on the key UpdateDefault.
  • In the value data field, I typed 1 and click on Ok.
  • Once this is done, close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.

This will enable Chrome update services on your computer. 👍

Important: The above method may not work on newer versions of Windows 10/11. If you're using the latest versions of Windows 10/11, follow the Services method shared above.

6. Allow Google Chrome in Windows Firewall

Aside from viruses and malware, Windows Firewall can also block the Google Chrome Update Service. This happens when Windows Firewall blocks the Google Chrome Update Service. Therefore, you should allow Google Chrome to run through the firewall to resolve the issue. 🛡️

1. First, open Windows search and type Windows Defender Firewall. Next, select the Windows Defender Firewall option from the list.

2. Click on Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall to the right.
