AmigaOS 3.2.3: 50+ fixes to revive your Amiga ✨

Work on AmigaOS 3.2 continues to move forward, with Hyperion Entertainment, the developers of this classic Motorola 680x0-friendly operating system, releasing version 3.2.3 a few days ago. In a newsletter posted on the official website, Hyperion highlighted that this third update to AmigaOS 3.2 includes two years of (more than 50) fixes and improvements. 🛠️✨

Revive your Commodore Amiga with the new AmigaOS 3.2.3 ROM: a fast update with instant improvements to stability, booting, and Workbench 3.2 compatibility. Ideal for A500/A600/A1200/A4000, it includes key fixes and system improvements. Find out how to install it and get more performance to your classic Amiga. #AmigaOS #Kickstart #Workbench #CommodoreAmiga #RetroComputing #Amiga500 #Amiga1200 #Update #ROM

It’s truly remarkable that AmigaOS 3.X development is still continuing into 2025, considering Commodore International released AmigaOS 3.0 in 1992 alongside the Commodore Amiga 1200, followed by version 3.1 with the release of the Amiga CD32 in 1993. Hyperion began their mission to modernize and improve this classic AmigaOS version for Motorola 680x0 platforms in 2018, when they released version 3.1.4. The AmigaOS 3.2 lineup started in 2021. 🚀💻

Notable updates in AmigaOS 3.2.3 include:

You may like
  • The ReAction classes have received numerous updates. ReAction is the latest object-oriented widget toolkit engine for the operating system. Initially a third-party enhancement, it is now the recommended toolkit for GUI programming on AmigaOS.
  • The Text Editor now allows users to define a custom menu with macros. 📋
  • 12KB of chip RAM is no longer reserved.
  • A new Kickstart ROM 3.2.3 is available.
  • At least 50 other fixes, including updates to DiskDoctor and HDToolbox.

What's up with AmigaOS 4.X?

Commodore's fall occurred in 1994, causing AmigaOS development to become fragmented and sporadic ever since, with license changes and no clear hardware platform to drive it. 💔

1994 is also the year Apple began its transition from the 68K architecture to PowerPC, so Amiga users lived through this difficult time imagining that PowerPC would be the right direction for advanced AmigaOS development. Therefore, you'll find several versions of AmigaOS 4.X—which aren't "newer" than the 3.X versions—they're simply versions dedicated to the PowerPC platform.

Additionally, there are AmigaOS style branches and compatible operating systems such as MorphOS (also on PowerPC) and HOOPS (x86, PowerPC, Arm). These options will take you even further away from the classic home computer platform (and apps, games) that many of you will be familiar with from the late 80s and early 90s. 🎮💾

How to get and use AmigaOS 3.2

This version is provided as a free upgrade for owners of AmigaOS 3.2. If you don't already have this operating system, you can get it now from official resellers such as RetroPassion UK. Although it supports ROMs as old as Kickstart 3.1, it is also recommended that you update your ROMs to version 3.2.3.

Currently, Arm-based accelerators seem to be the way to go for modern Amiga enthusiasts, as opposed to retro Amigas. AmigaOS 3.2.3 has an advantage, as it also supports classic 68K Amigas powered by Arm accelerators like PiStorm. However, even the most basic A500 with a humble MC68000 can be upgraded to run this operating system. 🥳

'New' Amiga hardware

Retrogames previously spoke of a “new full-size Amiga console “released” in Q4 2024. That time has passed, and we have heard rumors of disputes regarding the package software/OS.

Hyperion's new management (December 2024) denies that has to do with this delay, insisting that Retrogames has not yet contacted them, but they are “happy to start talks.”

In summaryAmigaOS 3.2.3 confirms that the spirit of the Amiga lives on: it includes more than 50 fixes and improvements that restore functionality and stability on both classic machines and modern ARM-powered systems.

If you already own AmigaOS 3.2, the free update is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of improvements to ReAction, TextEditor, DiskDoctor, and other utilities; if you don't have the system yet, official resellers are making it easy to purchase.

Although Amiga hardware continues to evolve, and there are several branches of AmigaOS for other architectures, this release strengthens compatibility with the 68K family and with current solutions like PiStorm, opening up possibilities for both retro users and modern Amiga enthusiasts. 🖥️💾⚙️🚀🔧
