How to fix ZIP error 0x80010135 in 4 simple steps ✨

Recently, some Windows users have experienced issues when attempting to extract ZIP files using the File Explorer extraction utility. Upon extraction, they receive the error message 0x80010135 'Path too long'. 🚫📁

This error 0x80010135 prevents users from extracting ZIP files using File Explorer's Extract option. If you've encountered the same error 0x80010135 or "Path Too Long" message, continue reading this guide. 👇

Actual cause of error 0x80010135: Path too long

This error message typically appears when the file path or file name exceeds 260 characters. Therefore, if the file name exceeds 260 characters, you will receive this error. 🛑

The 'Path too long' message can also appear due to an incorrect software installation, which leaves invalid entries, thus causing the path error. 🔧

Below we share some simple solutions to eliminate the mistake 0x80010135 extraction error on Windows 10/11. 💡

1. Restart your computer

The first step in any troubleshooting procedure is a simple system restart. Restarting the system stops applications and processes running in the background that may be interfering with File Explorer's functionality. 🔄

So, before moving on to more advanced solutions, it's essential to restart your Windows PC. Click the Windows Start button and select the Power Menu. In the power menu, select Restart. 🖥️

2. Reduce the length of the ZIP file name

As we all know, the Error 0x80010135: Path Too Long message usually appears when the extracted folder path exceeds the Windows 260-character limit.

If this is the reason you're receiving the error message, you'll need to shorten the ZIP filename. ✂️

1. To get started, open File Explorer. Then, navigate to the location where the ZIP file that you want to extract.

2. Right click on the ZIP file and select Rename.

3. Enter a shorter file name for the ZIP file. Make sure name the file briefly, it is recommended to keep the title to 5 or 6 characters. 🏷️

Once you've renamed it, you can extract the ZIP file from File Explorer. This time, you won't receive the error message. 👍

Even after renaming the ZIP file title, the extraction path may still be too long because it includes many subfolders.

You can shorten the extraction path by extracting the archive and moving it to the root directory. Here's how to do it: 🔄📂

1. Navigate to the folder where you saved the ZIP file.

2. Right click on the ZIP file and select Extract all.

3. Next, click the Browse button and select C: Drive. You can also choose any other drive, but make sure the extraction path is only C:, D:, etc.

4. Enable the longest file path

You can use Windows PowerShell to enable support for longer file paths in Windows. Enabling support for longer file paths may eliminate the 0x80010135 error message when extracting a ZIP. 🛠️

You can enable support for longer file paths by modifying the Registry, changing Local Group Policy, or running a PowerShell command. The PowerShell command is the easiest option; here's how to do it.

1. Type PowerShell in Windows Search. Then, right-click on PowerShell and select Run as administrator.

New-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem" -Name "LongPathsEnabled" -Value 1 -PropertyType DWORD –Force

To apply the changes, restart your Windows PC. After the restart, try extracting the ZIP file again; you will no longer receive the "Path is too long" error. ✅

If you're still receiving the Path Too Long error message, it's best to use third-party file extraction tools. 🗂️

To manage the ZIP file, you can use 7-Zip, a free tool available for Windows. Here's how to extract the file with 7-Zip on Windows.

1. Download and install the latest version of 7-Zip on your Windows PC.

3. Now, navigate to the location where the ZIP file is saved.

4. Right click on the ZIP file and select 7-Zip > Extract.
