What's happening with the New Sanctuary vault in Fortnite?
The New Sanctuary vault has gone from being a strategic loot location to a progression mystery within the season. The change isn't technical, but structural: it redefines how Fortnite links exploration, narrative, and overall rewards.
Figuring out how to open the New Sanctuary vault in Fortnite has left a large part of the community stuck: in previous seasons, this space, located in the heart of the triangular base, was a reliable source of rare loot. With the arrival of Chapter 7 Season 2, the access mechanism has changed, and the known route no longer works. Below, we analyze the current situation, why the vault seems inaccessible, and what aspect of the rewards system could restore its use.
Location and design: why the vault is where it is

The New Sanctuary vault is located at the point of interest (POI) of the same name, in the southeast of the map. It's integrated into the large triangular base attributed to The Seven; its placement doesn't appear random: the design forces the player to descend via a system of elevators and stairs to a lower level, where the vault occupies one of the triangle's vertices. This placement suggests an intention to control access—making the entrance a localized event within the map—rather than a simple chest scattered across the terrain.
Current state: inaccessible and with audible loot behind it

In the previous season, there was a large red button that activated the opening; in the current Season 2, that button has been removed. If you approach the blue door, sound effects can be heard indicating the presence of epic chests behind it, suggesting that the content has not been removed, but simply blocked. From a design perspective, the change turns the vault into a progression objective—a resource that can be enabled by events or global unlocks—rather than a freely instanced resource for each match.

In the Act I Showdown reward track, the last item for Team Foundation appears as Seven Compound Vault KeyThe strongest hypothesis among players and content creators is that this key, once unlocked through collective progress, will enable the vault to be opened. From a season design perspective, this makes sense: using a Showdown track reward as a trigger creates a point of convergence between matches and adds value to overall progression.
