WhatsApp is a widely used instant messaging app that features multiple hidden tools to enhance your account security and privacy, but which aren't enabled by default.
Belonging to Meta, WhatsApp faces challenges in complying with regional regulations, especially in the European Union, which means that many privacy settings must be activated manually.
There are alternatives with default privacy, but on WhatsApp, although the process is more complex, There are several key options that you should enable to maximize your digital protection.
I share with you How to secure your WhatsApp account in 5 essential steps for security and privacy that you need to activate today:
Restrict chats with a secret code 🔒

The first step to protecting your privacy is to activate the function Restrict chats with a secret code. Access the 3 top dots in the tab Settings and configure this code that will serve to hide and protect sensitive conversations.
This secret code will be necessary to find and open these hidden chats, preventing unauthorized access. You can also activate this restriction from the end of your conversations, although it's less practical if you have many saved chats.
Hide your personal information from unknown numbers 👤

To protect your personal information, such as your name, profile picture, or WhatsApp status, set your privacy settings so only your contacts can see this information. This will prevent unknown numbers from accessing your details just by sending you a message.
In Settings > Privacy Select to allow only your contacts to see your photo, status, and personal information. This step reduces the risk of scams by limiting visibility to people you actually know.
Set up temporary messages for greater control ⏳

Activate the temporary messages to have your chats automatically deleted after a defined period of time. You can choose between 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days to keep your history cleaner and safer.
This option is available in Settings > Privacy > Default Duration and will apply only to conversations started after activating it, ideal for automatic management and privacy enhancement.
Enable end-to-end encryption for backups 🔐

If you save your backups on Google Drive, it is vital to activate the end-to-end encryption to protect that data. This feature isn't enabled by default, so you'll need to activate it manually.
In Settings > Chats > Backup You'll find this option at the bottom of the menu. Activating it gives your conversations and files an extra layer of encryption to prevent unauthorized access.
Protect your IP address and browse safely 🌐

Your IP address is one of the most sensitive pieces of information you have. The main recommendation is to always use a VPN, which masks your IP and adds an extra layer of security to your browsing.
