Transition to Linux: The 7 apps that accelerate your switch 🚀

😰 Switching operating systems can seem complicated at first: you have to check if your favorite apps are available and find alternatives for those that aren't. Here are the ones I installed immediately after switching to Linux, to make your transition quick and easy.

1. Steam

🎮 Steam is the most popular digital gaming platform on the internet, and losing access to your library just because you switch systems would be a shame. The fun on PC often comes from playing games, and fortunately, Steam is there. Available for major Linux distributionsFurthermore, its layer of Proton compatibility makes gaming on Linux easier. like never before. Steam login window in Kubuntu.

Steam accurately identifies which games will work on Linux and which won't, saving you time and bandwidth by avoiding unnecessary downloads.

You can easily download Steam from the Software Center (the "app store" of Linux) on most distributions.

What is Proton and how does it improve gaming on Linux?

Proton is a compatibility layer built into Steam that allows you to run Windows-based games on Linux seamlessly. This has revolutionized gaming on Linux, making it more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. How Proton works on Steam.

2. Discord

Discord has become the standard platform for communication between gamers and developer communities, especially in open-source projects. It's my primary tool for staying in touch with friends and collaborating in real time. Discord login page on Kubuntu.

I recommend installing Discord via Snap, available in almost all Linux distribution Software Centers, since the DEB or RPM versions from the official site require manual updates.

3. VSCodium

👨‍💻 VSCodium It's the free telemetry version of Visual Studio Code, the text editor favored by many programmers. It supports a vast library of extensions for almost any programming language, approaching a complete integrated development environment. VSCodium main interface.

For basic text editing I use Vim, but for advanced programming VSCodium is my first choice. You can Download it from GitHub or install it via Snap to easily keep it updated.

4. Spotify

🎵 Music is my indispensable work companion, helping me stay on track and focused on my tasks. Spotify is available for Linux and is easily accessible through the package manager or by adding a repository if needed. Spotify on Kubuntu showing music playing.

5. VLC

📺 Although most Linux distributions include a decent media player, I've been a fan of VLC for years. Its ability to adjust audio and video, along with its compatibility with almost all popular formats, makes it unbeatable. VLC player on Linux.

In addition, VLC can quickly convert multimedia formats, a feature I use frequently. The version VLC 4.0 It features a revamped interface, still under development, but stable enough for daily use. For greater stability, you can download the official version from [link missing]. your site or repositories.

6. ONLYOFFICE

📝 Although I don't use Microsoft Office all the time, I needed a serious alternative for Linux. LibreOffice is excellent and comes pre-installed, but I was looking for an interface more similar to Microsoft Office.

After exploring options, I chose ONLYOFFICE, which is easy to use and visually very similar. I downloaded it directly from the official website, although you can also install it from the Software Center or terminal. ONLYOFFICE interface similar to Microsoft Office.

7. BitWarden

🔐 In a world where passwords are essential, I use BitWarden I've been using it for years to keep my passwords secure. Fortunately, it's available for Linux (I use Kubuntu) and it was easy to set up on my phone too.

In addition to storing passwords, BitWarden stores card data and is protected with a strong master password for maximum security. BitWarden's main login interface.

In addition to syncing your passwords, BitWarden can automatically generate secure passwords and check if any of yours have been exposed in online leaks. Password generator function in BitWarden.

🚀 Switching to Linux is no longer as difficult or intimidating, especially compared to years ago. Today's tools make the transition quick and seamless, allowing you to continue your workflow without losing functionality.

It took me less than an hour to completely migrate my environment, including searching, downloading, and installation of alternatives, and customization in my opinion.

🔥 Ready to transform your Linux experience? Install these apps and start enjoying a powerful and versatile operating system today.
