Unlock Yasuke: Discover the secret Kofun that will change your gameplay! 🥷💥
¡Assassin's Creed Shadows It immerses us in a world incredibly ripe for exploration! 🎮 That's exactly what I've invested most of my time in this RPG in. When I'm not searching looks Stylish or decorative trinkets, I enjoy the views and capture photos in photo mode. 📸
In fact, I had so much fun doing everything except the main story that I spent over 20 hours before unlocking Yasuke. ⏳ I'm sure I'm not alone in this situation.
There are so many lookouts to reach, castles to clear, and side quests to uncover—not to mention shady organizations to take down—that it's easy to get distracted like Naoe in the first few hours of the game. 🏰🔍
When I finally tried out the ways of the samurai, I found myself in a Kofun tailor-made for Yasuke. Figuring out how to reach the treasure within it was not only rewarding, but, having cleared one early on as Naoe, this ancient mausoleum proved to be a perfect training ground to get me used to playing as Yasuke. 🥷
A different approach

The Kofuns in Assassin's Creed Shadows They're quite similar to the ancient tombs scattered across the desert in Assassin's Creed Origins, or the Tombs of the Fallen that were added in an update to Assassin's Creed Valhalla. They're essentially underground environmental puzzles that have you figuring out how to overcome blocked paths or obstacles to progress further. With the Observation feature showing you a blue icon as a guide, reaching a legendary chest deep within the Kofun is often the ultimate goal. 💎
I stumbled across one very early in the RPG thanks to my constant desire to reach more vantage points and question marks on my map. It allowed me to take full advantage of Naoe's agile movements, ducking, jumping across gaps with my trusty grappling hook, and sometimes diving when I spotted smaller chests underwater. I didn't know this location was tied to a quest I wouldn't pursue until many hours later, but stumbling across it early on had its advantages; while one part was partially closed to me, I was still able to open the large, shiny chest, which contained one of the first pieces of legendary loot I'd ever obtained. 🎁
When I finally found the Makino Kurumazuka Kofun shortly after unlocking Yasuke, I was exploring again as Naoe. She's the one you should often use if you want to reach the vantage points at the top of towers or castle structures, as Yasuke's climbing ability is limited. But it was immediately clear to me that the shinobi protagonist wouldn't be able to take on this Kofun. The entrance was blocked with stone, and while there were explosive jars nearby, they were too far from the obstacle to have any impact. Since Naoe can't lift or move the heavy explosives, I quickly realized that her samurai counterpart was the answer. 🏯
It was the first time I found myself in a location specifically designed for Yasuke, and I took the opportunity to immerse myself in the use of the other protagonist's heavy armor, with whom I hadn't had the chance to become familiar with up until that point. Once I discovered how Yasuke's strength and stature completely changed the puzzle's challenge, I realized that performing a Kofun in his sandals was a whole new challenge compared to Naoe's quick foray into the underground.
But it’s equally satisfying to use Yasuke’s distinctive talents in different ways to work out how to get to the chest, and the further I progressed, the more I appreciated how the tomb was providing just the kind of introductory training I needed to familiarize myself with how he moved and interacted with his environment. I could, for example, pick up explosive vases and place or throw them with ease, unlike Naoe, who can’t move them. This made clearing the rubble a breeze, as I could place an explosive and use my bow to detonate it with a well-aimed shot. 🎯
Grave Hunter

The effort required to enter the tomb sets a precedent for the rest of the Kofun, with several blocked paths and obstacles demanding Yasuke's robust aptitude. That doesn't mean the puzzles are necessarily any easier for him. At one point, I had to think outside the box and experienced a true eureka moment when I discovered I could use the game's physics to roll and push an exploding vase from a prone position into a low space to reach my prize. 💡
There were many small ways the tomb allowed me to get to know Yasuke and notice the stark differences between the two protagonists. One that comes to mind is when I came across a tightrope that I optimistically tried to cross. Of course, it wouldn't be a problem for Naoe, but thanks to the samurai's size and weight, it immediately snapped, forcing me to find another way to advance to the other side of the Kofun.
I've been really enjoying the differences between the two protagonists and how they both urge me to adapt to their strengths and weaknesses, shifting my approach. And this Kofun was really my first taste of that. After exploring the depths as Naoe, Yasuke's tomb-raiding adventures made me think differently and find solutions that worked for his particular abilities. It may have taken me 20 hours to get to Yasuke, but I felt like I was destined to encounter that Kofun soon after. Who knows what puzzles I'll face next? But I'm looking forward to seeing how I'll tackle them as a shinobi or a samurai. ⚔️
