Repairing a notebook's video chip is like repairing a PC's graphics card.

One of the most common failures that laptops suffer is the failure of the graphics chip or GPU (Graphics Pprocessing ORThe problem is almost always caused by a fault in the soldering between the graphics chip component and the motherboard. The cause, in almost all cases, is overheating. When this occurs, the only way to solve it is by using the graphics chip reballing.

Reballing

Problems with a laptop with the graphics chip in poor condition are:

  • There is no video on the laptop screen. If we connect an external monitor there is no signal either.
  • Streaks, artifacts, or nonsensical pixels appear on the screen.
  • Occasionally the laptop will boot up perfectly until it goes black again after a while.
  • The laptop appears to be functioning normally until it heats up, drawing more current from the power supply (usually after about 15-30 minutes) and lines start appearing on the screen.

When starting the operating system, lines or dots appear on the screen.

Blockade

When starting demanding applications, the laptop crashes.

Heating

After a while of turning on the laptop, it crashes or error screens appear

In the act of lighting a notebook computer, the core of the graphics chip starts to heat up. If your laptop has dirty or bad (noisy) fans and heatsinks, the computer will overheat and gradually weaken the solder joints. More than 90% of laptops that have graphics chip problems have dirty or inefficient cooling and fan systems.

The solution, in almost all cases, is to do reballing the graphics chipReballing involves replacing the solder between the graphics chip and the motherboard. To do this, we need to remove the motherboard from the laptop, protect the areas of the motherboard that cannot withstand high temperatures, and use a machine that uses hot air guns and infrared to heat the graphics chip to a specific temperature, allowing us to remove the chip without damaging the motherboard.

We start by preheating the motherboard from below and above. Once the required temperature has been reached (Each model of graphics chip requires a temperature curve) we proceed to remove it. With the graphics chip out of the motherboard we proceed to remove all the tin on the motherboard and the chip. Next we proceed to carry out the reballing itself, which consists of placing the small tin balls on the graphics chip using a template.

Then proceed to clean with Flux Remover all surfaces to remove residue and ensure proper cleaning. This last step is essential to ensure a strong and long lasting weld. Finally, the weld is placed graphics chip aligned to the base plate so that each ball is just above its corresponding place, proceed to preheat, follow the temperature curve and reach fusion.

Finally, the thermal paste is changed and the fans and heatsinks are cleaned to ensure proper internal ventilation.

When the fault is eliminated and there are no more symptoms, it is tested with software such as FurMark to push the GPU to the maximum and be sure that it is free of faults or symptoms.

If you have a MacBook or iMac laptop we can also repair it.

Reballing services can be performed on computers of all brands or models that have a GPU or dedicated video chip, including all-in-one or graphics cards.

Most image errors are eliminated by video component rework, but sometimes replacement of the video component may be necessary.

If your equipment needs spare parts or a new video chip, we have original components direct from the manufacturer.

In the case of graphics cards, reballing repairs are carried out for PCI express models; older models may not have a stencil available.

Reflow or Reballing?

Reballing is always the best option. Reflow is temporary, because it only does the heating part of the chip and since the spheres are not changed, micro-cracks can return over time. In addition, there are cases of sulfate forming between the sphere and the surface of the motherboard, or that is only eliminated with the complete reballing process. In short, reflow is not a good idea, even the return rate under warranty is very high. For permanent repairs, always opt for reballing.
