Steam Game Recording in 2025

Steam reminds players that they do not own their purchases

Steam Game Recording Now Available for Everyone!

Valve has announced that all Steam players can record their gameplay without any additional software, as the feature has officially left beta.

Game recording on Steam began beta testing this summer, but is now available to everyone in the updated Steam client for Windows PCs and Macs (which no longer support Windows 7, Windows 8, macOS High Sierra 10.13, and macOS Mojave 10.14).

To use the feature, open the Steam client and navigate to Settings > Game Recording. Your Steam client can automatically record games in the background while you play, making it easy to create gameplay videos to share (disabled by default). “There are many ways to use this new set of features, from capturing your best moments to documenting entire campaigns,” Valve wrote. “It’s easy to find, trim, and share your gameplay.”

Or you can start and stop a recording session screen manually by pressing Ctrl + F11. There are options to restrict recording length, quality, and storage space. You can find your recordings in the Steam overlay as MP4 video files and share them via links disguised as QR codes.

Your game recordings even have markers to quickly jump to specific events, such as achievements earned or screenshots performed. Supported games can add specific markers to the timeline, such as when you finish a boss fight or start a new round. Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2 are the first games with timeline marker support, with more to come over time.

Steam game recording takes advantage of graphics cards NVIDIA and AMD to record gameplay without consuming too many resources from the title being played. However, this depends on the specific game, your machine configuration, and other factors. When running on systems without those graphics cards, the system's CPU is used to create video recordings, which can result in a noticeable impact on performance. performance "of those systems," Valve warned.

This feature is not limited to Steam; you can also record games on your Steam Deck to internal storage or an SD card. For more information, visit the Valve Game Recording Page.

This Steam update includes other new features beyond game recording, such as per-game settings, a new view that brings together the recording and screenshot manager with game-specific tags and data, support for AV1 video streaming for Remote Play on high-performance systems, support for wired Xbox controllers on macOS Sequoia, and more.
