Apple AI Tools: 3 Steps to Make Your Old iPhone Pro
The Essentials! 📝
Most iPhones don't have Apple Intelligence, so the Writing Tools feature isn't available to the vast majority of iPhone owners.
Don't worry! You can create a shortcut to rewrite text using ChatGPT, which emulates Apple's typing tools.
This shortcut can reproduce results similar to Apple's Writing Tools on older iPhones, although the processing is done on ChatGPT's servers rather than locally on your device.
Why can't I use Apple Tools? 🤔
Apple Intelligence features require modern chips and a lot of RAM, so the vast majority of iPhone models can't use them. If your iPhone isn't compatible, you can recreate Apple's writing tools by creating a shortcut that uses the free ChatGPT app to rewrite your text.
If you have an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any of the iPhone 16 models, you can take advantage of Apple's Writing Tools to rewrite or summarize text. Today, I'll focus on five writing rewrite tools.
- Proofread: correct any spelling or grammatical errors.
- Rewrite: gives you an alternative version of your text.
- Friendly: makes your text sound more informal.
- Professional: makes it more formal.
- Concise: shortens it while maintaining the meaning. Go! 🚀
Emulate Writing Tools! 🔄
It's possible to mimic Apple's typing tools using the free ChatGPT app. You can create a shortcut that takes the text from your iPhone's clipboard and pass it to ChatGPT, along with a prompt asking you to correct it, rewrite it, or make it more concise.
The shortcut takes the response generated by ChatGPT and saves it to the clipboard, so you can paste it anywhere!
Create your Shortcut! 🛠️
You will need to have the ChatGPT app (available on the App Store) installed and running on your iPhone for this shortcut to work.
There are five different writing tools in iOS 18, so the first step is to create a menu to select the writing tool you want to use.
Open the app Shortcuts and tap the icon "+" at the top of the screen. Tap "Search for Actions," type "Get Clipboard," and select the "Get Clipboard" action. This will bring the copied text into the shortcut.
Search for "Menu" and select the "Choose from Menu" action. Tap "One," delete the text, and type "Proofread." Tap "Two," delete the text and type "Rewrite." Tap the "Add New Item" button three times to add three more options to the menu.
Tap the first new menu option and type "Friendly." Tap the second new menu option and type "Professional." Select the last menu item and type "Concise." You should now see sections for each option below the menu.
Emulate every tool! 🖋️
Now that you've created a menu, it's time to emulate each of the writing tools. The Proofread tool can check your text for spelling and grammatical errors and automatically correct them.
This part of the shortcut takes the text from the clipboard and creates a prompt asking ChatGPT to correct any errors. The prompt is assigned to a variable that is sent to ChatGPT at the end of the shortcut.
- Tap “Search for Actions,” search for “Text,” and select “Text” from the results.
- Tap "Text" and type: "I've rewritten this text to correct any spelling and grammar errors. Don't reply with anything other than the corrected text:"
- Tap “Select Variable,” scroll up, and select “Clipboard.”
Be sure to include the line “Don’t reply with anything other than the corrected text:” or ChatGPT may reply with additional text like “Of course, here’s your corrected text for spelling and grammar!”
The Rewrite tool generates an alternative version of your text that maintains the same meaning.
