How to disable Apple Mail categories in 3 steps πŸ“§βŒ

In iOS 18.2, Apple launched a major change to the Mail app for iPhone with a new Categories feature, which is now also available on iPad and Mac with iPadOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4. Categories automatically organize your emails into four distinct sections: Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. However, while this organization system is intended to help manage email clutter, not all users will be happy with the new design. πŸ“§

iOS 18 Mail App
Mail Categories intelligently organize incoming emails into different sections. Important emails are displayed in the "Primary" category, while orders, newsletters, social notifications, and offers are organized into three other sections.

The "Transactions" section includes receipts, orders, and deliveries, making it easy to find orders you've placed and shipping information for those orders. The "Updates" section includes newsletters, alerts for things like medical appointments, and correspondence, as well as other subscription emails. Finally, Apple's "Promotions" category includes special offers and discount emails. πŸ“¦βœ¨

Keep in mind that even if an email would normally fall into Transactions, Updates, or Promotions, it will still appear in your Primary inbox if it contains critical information. On devices that support Apple Intelligence, the system goes a step further by highlighting priority emails that require action or have deadlines. ⏰

Mail Categories: Why You Might Want to Go Back

The new Category view, while useful for some, might not fit your email management style. Perhaps you prefer to see all your emails in chronological order or have your own organization system. Or maybe you just want to quickly access all your emails without having to switch between categories. On iPhone and iPad, you can swipe left on categories to switch to an "All Mail" view (the same option is available on Mac to the right of the category buttons), but what if you want to remove the categories altogether? βŒπŸ—‚οΈ

How to return to list view in Apple Mail

Categories are the default view after updating to the new software. Fortunately, Apple makes it easy to return to the traditional list view. Here's how to do it:

  1. Open the Mail app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  2. On iPhone/iPad, tap the button Further (three dots) in the upper right corner of your inbox. On a Mac, you can find the More button at the top of your inbox view.

  3. On iPhone/iPad, select List View from the drop-down menu. On a Mac, click Show Mail Categories to uncheck it.

mail

Once you switch to List View, your inbox will once again display all your emails in chronological order, just as it did before. The change takes effect immediately. While categorization isn't perfect, Apple is likely to improve this feature over time. You can always return to Category View using the same menu if you want to try it again later. πŸ”„

Note: If you're using an iPhone/iPad that supports Apple Intelligence, you'll see an additional option in the More menu for priority messages. This option won't appear on devices that don't support Apple Intelligence. The More menu also has an "About Categories" section where you can see how your messages have been categorized over the past week, but there's no option to tell the Mail app if you think an email has been categorized incorrectly.

In summary, although the function of Categories Apple Mail offers an innovative way πŸ“§βœ¨ to organize your emails automatically, but not all users will find this new structure suitable for their way of managing email.

Luckily, Apple makes it easy to disable this view and return to the classic chronological list in iPhone, iPad, and Mac, giving you the control to choose as you prefer to view and manage your messages πŸ“±πŸ’».

As Apple continues to refine this feature, you'll always have the option to try it out or return to the traditional view based on your personal needs and preferences πŸ”„πŸ‘.
