Laptop Video Repair

Repairing the Video chip on a notebook is like repairing the graphics card on a PC.

One of the most common faults suffered by laptops is the failure in the graphics chip or GPU (Grapics Pprocessing ORnit). The problem is almost always caused by a failure in the soldering between the graphics chip component and the motherboard. The origin, in almost all cases, is overheating. When this happens the only way to fix it is by graphics chip reballing.

The problems of a laptop with the graphics chip in poor condition are:

  • No video appears on the laptop screen. If we connect an external monitor there is no signal either.
  • Streaks, artifacts, or meaningless pixels appear on the screen.
  • From time to time the laptop starts perfectly until it goes black again after a while.
  • The laptop appears to be operating normally until it heats up, draining more current from the power supply (usually after 15-30 minutes) and streaks appear on the screen.

Heating

In the act of lighting a laptop, the core of the graphics chip starts to heat up. If the laptop has dirty or bad fans and heatsinks (with noise), the computer will overheat and gradually weaken the solders. More than 90% laptops that have graphics chip problems have dirty or inefficient cooling and heatsinks.

Laptop Video Repair – Reballing

Video Reballing Repair

The solution, in almost all cases, is to do reballing to the graphics chip. Reballing consists of replacing the existing tin between the graphics chip and the motherboard. To do this we have to remove the motherboard from the laptop, protect the areas of the motherboard that do not withstand high temperatures and use a machine that uses hot air and infrared guns to heat the graphics chip to a specific temperature and that allows us to extract the chip without damaging the motherboard.

We start by preheating the base plate below and above. Once the necessary temperature is reached (Each graphics chip model needs a temperature curve) it is extracted. With the graphics chip off the motherboard we proceed to remove all the tin on the motherboard and on the chip. Next, the reballing itself is carried out, which consists of putting the small tin balls on the graphics chip using a template.

Then proceed to clean with flux remover all surfaces to remove residue and ensure proper cleaning. This last step is essential to ensure a strong and durable weld. To finish, place the graphics chip aligned to the base plate so that each ball is just above its corresponding place, proceed to preheat, follow the temperature curve and reach fusion.

Finally, we proceed to change the thermal paste and clean the fans and heatsinks to ensure proper internal ventilation.

When the fault is eliminated and there are no more symptoms, it is tested with software such as FurMark to force the GPU to the maximum and be sure that it is free of failures or symptoms.

If you have a MacBook or Imac laptop we can also repair it.

Reballing services can be executed on computers of all brands or models that have a dedicated GPU or video chip, including all in one or graphics card.

Most image errors are removed by the video component rework service, but sometimes it may be necessary to change the video components.

If your equipment needs spare parts or a new video chip, we have original components direct from the manufacturer.

In the case of a graphics card, repairs at the reballing level are made for pci express models, previous models may not have stencils available.

Reflow or Reballing?

Reballing is always the best option. The reflow is somewhat temporary, because only the heating part of the chip is done and since the spheres are not changed, the microcracks can return over time, there are also cases of sulfate formed between the sphere and the surface of the motherboard, or which is only eliminated, with the complete reballing process. In short, Reflow is not a good idea, even the rate of return under warranty is very high. For permanent repairs, always opt for Reballing.
