  10. The decisions will be the true test for Osiris Reborn

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Owlcat Games wants decisions to be more than just a dialogue option. They're building an action RPG where a single choice can alter an immediate mission, your relationship with the crew, the development of certain characters, access to factions, and opportunities that appear much later on.

The key is that the game doesn't seem to be looking for a universally correct answer. Beta published by Owlcat It already includes an important decision without indicating to the player whether they have chosen the "good" or "bad" path, and the developers have continued to explain how that principle will extend throughout the rest of the adventure.

What has been confirmed so far

The decisions in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn These changes can affect combat situations, character survival, personal relationships, companion development, political reputation, and access to content. However, the game is still in development, so we don't yet know the full extent of all its ramifications.

Decisions in The Expanse: What Really Changes

The idea that a decision can change an RPG isn't new. The problem is that many games present seemingly dramatic choices that end up barely altering a conversation, a reward, or the immediately following scene. Owlcat attempts to... Osiris Reborn have a more reactive structure.

In a official blog post published on SteamThe study explained that decisions can ripple through different systems. A decision made in one mission can change who holds power, which characters are affected, and how others react once the initial conflict is over.

Type of decisionImmediate effectPotential consequence
Defender PinkwaterChange who participates in the confrontation. You can modify casualties, resources, and the subsequent status of the station.
Choosing a mentor for PollyDefine who influences their training. It can change your skills and the person you become.
Captain's OriginModifies equipment, initial capabilities, and relationships.Open different contacts, missions, and routes depending on Earth, Mars, or the Belt.
Relationship with the factionsPolitical trust is changing. It can alter missions, rewards, support, and the fate of characters.

Pinkwater shows how a consequence works

One of the clearest examples can already be seen in the closed beta. After the events of Eros, the player arrives at a Pinkwater Security facility pursued by Protogen forces. There, a decision appears that doesn't simply consist of selecting two dialogue options with different tones.

The captain can try to convince the station's commander to have its inhabitants help resist Protogen or find a way out that avoids directly involving them. If Pinkwater fights, its forces provide support, but the resistance also exposes its inhabitants to the consequences of the confrontation.

Owlcat had already revealed a small but significant detail during development: if the defenders use the available weapons in combat, the armory the player later finds may be partially empty. In the other scenario, those resources may still be there. It's a modest consequence compared to the overall narrative, but that's precisely why it's interesting: it demonstrates that a single decision can alter both the story and the environment itself.

There is no such thing as a "right decision" label.

The official beta description itself warns that the universe doesn't tell the player whether they've made a right or wrong choice. The design aims to force the player to live with the outcome, rather than immediately presenting a moral score.

The crew can also change because of your decisions.

The consequences aren't limited to stations, battles, or secondary NPCs. The Gemini crew is also part of this system, and Polly Haart is one of the examples Owlcat has used to explain how far he wants to take it.

Polly doesn't necessarily have only one future.

Polly is a young Belter who wants to prove she can do something important. Throughout the story, the player will have to decide who to follow closely and what kind of influence they will have. This mentor doesn't just affect a single statistic.

According to details published by Owlcat, Polly can pursue different paths: becoming a more cautious hacker, developing engineering skills, or pursuing a career in medicine. This choice affects both her abilities and the character the game develops over time.

This represents a significant difference from the classic system where a companion joins the party with a completely predetermined skill tree. Here, at least some aspects of their evolution are tied to the captain's relationships and decisions.

A relationship is not just about romance

Comparisons to other space RPGs often quickly lead to discussions of romance, but the game offers much more. Crewmates have their own interests, loyalties, and backstories. Relationships with them can improve or deteriorate depending on how the player manages the crew and the decisions they make.

The ship also serves as a common space for the group. It's not just the menu from which a mission is selected: Owlcat presents it as the home of a crew forced to live together while political and personal tensions escalate.

Earther, Martian or Belter: origin is also a choice

One of the most important expansions revealed during 2026 is the origins system. When creating the captain, you can choose between Earther, Martian or BelterIt is not a purely aesthetic selection.

Owlcat has confirmed that each origin provides different bonuses related to exploration, starting equipment, and a unique armor appearance. It also influences the physical appearance of the protagonist and their twin, J.

The most interesting difference, however, appears outside the statistics screen. Place of birth influences how certain people and factions perceive the captain.

  • A Belter You can find old contacts and a different reception in Ceres.
  • Un Earther It maintains its own connections on the Moon.
  • A Martian It has advantages related to Mars and can access certain areas earlier.
  • Other groups may show distrust, deny the ship's landing, or demand that the player prove their loyalty.

The study even explained that there will be quest chains specifically related to the origin. This turns a choice made before starting the adventure into a variable that can reappear many hours later.

The system also avoids confining the character to a traditional class. Owlcat explained in July 2026 that the captain progresses through four skill trees, while equipped weapons and gadgets play a significant role in defining combat style. In other words, your origins influence who you are within the game world, but don't permanently determine how you fight.

Earth, Mars, and the Belt are not just political window dressing.

In The ExpansePolitics has never functioned solely as a narrative backdrop. The tension between Earth, Mars, and the Belt is one of the foundations of the universe created by James S.A. Corey, and Osiris Reborn try to translate that structure into the player's decisions.

The game places the captain in a moment of high tension between the major powers. UNN, the MCRN and the various forces linked to Belt They have incompatible interests, and the protagonist's background can facilitate or hinder certain contacts.

Furthermore, the relationships the player builds with these factions can have later repercussions. Owlcat has revealed that a strong relationship can unlock specific content, including faction-specific rewards and missions, and even provide support during certain operations.

It doesn't seem designed to please everyone indefinitely.

The developer has made it clear that maintaining good relationships with all parties simultaneously will be difficult. This matters because it prevents, at least in theory, resolving the political system by accumulating reputation points with everyone without incurring any losses.

Why the Mass Effect comparison makes sense

For those who arrive thinking of Mass EffectThe comparison is inevitable. There's a customizable captain, a ship that acts as a command center, companions with their own stories, third-person combat, and decisions that affect relationships and missions.

Influence is not solely an interpretation of the public, either. Leonid Rastorguev, design director of Osiris Reborn, he already acknowledged during development the inspiration for some ideas from Mass Effect 2.

That doesn't mean both games use the same system. The Expanse Its political context is much more heavily influenced by the physical and cultural background of its inhabitants. The choice between Earther, Martian, and Belter, the territorial restrictions, and the relationship between UNN, MCRN, and the Belt could give it a distinct identity if Owlcat manages to maintain these variables throughout the campaign.

What the beta allows us to verify and what is still a promise

It is important to separate what can already be observed in a playable version from what still depends on the full game managing to support all these ramifications.

Already proven or confirmed

  • There is an important choice within the mission included in the beta.
  • One decision can modify combat, casualties, and resources present on the scene.
  • The Earther, Martian, and Belter origins alter mechanical and narrative components.
  • Some characters react differently depending on their background and previous decisions.
  • Relationships with factions will have narrative and gameplay repercussions.

It still needs to be proven in the full game.

  • To what extent will early decisions still matter dozens of hours later?
  • How many truly different narrative branches will exist?
  • How much will the fates of companions and main characters change?
  • How will all the variables of origin, crew, and faction be resolved together?
  • How many different endings will the story ultimately have?

This distinction is important. The system shows promise, but Osiris Reborn It has not yet been commercially released and it is not possible to evaluate the entire campaign based solely on a one or two hour beta and the explanations of its developers.

Current state of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn

In August 2026, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn It is still under development. The beta version is available from April 22, 2026 For Founders who own the Miller's Pack or Collector's Edition.

The beta includes a complete mission from an early stage of the campaign, four predefined protagonist configurations, the J twin as an active companion, eight firearms, nine gadget-related abilities, and the aforementioned choice-with-consequences feature. Owlcat estimates approximately one to two hours to complete this content, depending on how much exploration and interaction with characters is engaged.

For the final launch, the official Steam listing currently indicates the second quarter of 2027That is, a window between April and June 2027. There is no specific launch date yet.

The game is scheduled for PC, PlayStation 5 y Xbox Series X|SOn PC, it has been announced for Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. It is also planned as an Xbox Play Anywhere title and will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions about Decisions at The Expanse

Do the decisions in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn change history?

Yes. Owlcat has confirmed consequences for characters, relationships, missions, and factions. The beta already allows you to experience some immediate variations, although it's not yet possible to gauge the depth of all the branches in the final campaign.

Is there a good choice and a bad choice?

Not necessarily. Owlcat has explained that the game doesn't aim to tell the player whether a response is morally correct. Some decisions offer immediate advantages in exchange for later problems.

Does choosing Earther, Martian, or Belter change anything?

Yes. Origin influences starting abilities, equipment, appearance, contacts, and the reactions of certain NPCs. There are also routes and missions specifically related to the captain's background.

Is it possible to maintain a good relationship with all factions?

The study indicates that doing so will be difficult. The intention seems to be that supporting a group will have a political cost, and that the player cannot neutralize all the consequences simply by trying to please everyone.

When does The Expanse: Osiris Reborn come out?

The official release window currently listed on Steam is the second quarter of 2027. The game is still in development, so that window may still change.

The decisions will be the true test for Osiris Reborn

Owlcat has already shown enough pieces to understand the direction of The Expanse: Osiris RebornAn election can change who fights alongside you; origins can determine who trusts you; a relationship can alter a comrade's future; and a political alliance can open some doors while closing others.

The question, therefore, is not whether there will be decisions. That's already confirmed. The real test will come when we can see if the complete game manages to remember those decisions, combine them, and make them visible many hours after they were made. If Owlcat maintains that reactivity until the end, Osiris Reborn It will have arguments to be something more than a space RPG inspired by Mass Effect: will be able to transform the political and personal tensions of The Expanse in a real part of the game.
